DICT WINS THE OVERSTRAND MAYOR’S ANNUAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION AWARD
<< BACK
DICT was honoured to receive the prestigious Mayor’s Floating Trophy for the most meritorious contribution to Environmental Conservation in the Overstrand area, for our African penguin nesting project, announced at an award ceremony on Thursday 11th June 2009 in Hermanus.
We share the award this year with Kleinmond Nature Conservation Society. This award is conferred to either an individual or an organisation that has made an exceptional contribution to environmental conservation within the Overstrand Municipal area.
The criteria that were considered in evaluation of the proposals included:
• Creativity, innovation and effort displayed
• Impact, effectiveness and sustainability
• Inspirational, educational and/or scientific value
• Level of community involvement/ownership and interest/awareness
• Project on which the award money will be spent
Councillor Theo Beyleveldt, the Overstrand Mayor, awarded DICT and the Kleinmond Nature Conservation Society with the coveted trophy – a wooden sculpture of penguins by Overstrand artist Gordon Cunningham, along with a cheque of R2500 to further our conservation work.
This prize money will go towards the penguins’ plight, with our main objective being to help reverse the habitat destruction that has caused the penguins to nest in the open, where their chicks and eggs are vulnerable to predatory gulls and climatic extremes.
