BEACH CLEAN UP
<< BACK
We have two beach clean ups for public participation scheduled for the festive season. Today saw the first one kick off. Sadly not well attended but strong friendships were built with the few who were there. Stanford Cove is a beautiful beach area surrounded by rocks with small inlets. However, the amount of litter that is washed in by sea is often a source of stress which is why it featured on the list of places to clean. We filled in data cards for the Ocean Conservancy and collected 4 bags of rubbish.
Statistics included:
Cigarette butts – 106
Caps/Lids – 152
Straws - 68
The number of small plastic pieces is almost too difficult to count and it is these plastic pieces that are ingested by many marine birds.
We even found 12 alcohol bottles that someone had abandoned. Three toothbrushes? One has to ask where this stuff comes from – is it being thrown overboard or coming from up rivers? Either way, every piece of litter has a persons face behind it. A few days before I found abandoned fast food containers in the parking area with a bin only 1m away. If everyone played their part in keeping our world clean how much prettier and healthier it would be.
Hope to see a few more people at the clean up at Danger Point on the 6th January at 10am.
Just a reminder there is a Talk on the Trust on the 29th December at 6pm – Great White House
