DICT HOLDS INTERACTIVE PRESENTATIONS IN HONOUR OF WORLD OCEANS DAY

WORLD OCEANS DAY 8 June 2010 – OCEAN EDUCATION
 In honour of World Oceans Day, we held interactive presentations at Laerskool Gansbaai.
Marine biologists, Michelle Wcisel and Katja Vinding-Petersen, led a fun and interactive educational experience about the valuable part in the ecosystem that the ocean plays.
The children learnt two new terms – biotic (living creatures) and abiotic (non-living). They learnt about the two currents that meet here, the cold Benguela and the warm Agulhas which create a rich upwelling and provide a nutrient rich feeding ground. The children gasped at beautiful pictures of the Marine Big 5™ - the whales; the Great White Shark; the endangered African Penguin; the Cape Fur Seal and dolphins – that exist right here on our doorstep. Further fun was had by the older group when they learnt more about the ocean food web. As the human consumer, they also learnt which fish they should and shouldn’t eat as per the South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI).
 Our impact of marine pollution was highlighted and a poster was given to each class with some ideas of how they can make a personal difference to the health of our ocean. Each child had to fill in their commitment on a footprint cut out, representing their personal footprint on our planet.
The Trust plans to continue this theme during National Marine Week 11-15 October 2010 and broaden the reach to our other local schools in the area.
