Species

What are IUCN classifications?
EXTINCT:
Extinct: The death of the last individual of the species (e.g. the Dodo)
Extinct in the wild: Only known living individuals are in captivity (e.g. Barbary Lion)
THREATENED WITH EXTINCTION:
Critically Endangered: Species numbers will decrease by 80% in three generations (e.g. Northern right whale only 315 left)
Endangered: At risk of extinction because of few numbers or changing environment (e.g. Siberian Tiger)
Vulnerable: Likely to become endangered unless survival/reproduction improve, there are over 9000 organisms with this distinction
AT LOWER RISK:
Conservation Dependent: Species that depend on human involvement to maintain populations (e.g. Leopard Shark)
Near Threatened: May become threatened in the future (e.g. European Otter)
Least Concern: Have been evaluated, but do not qualify for any classification, growing populations (e.g. HUMANS!)
